Barry D. Walston, MSW, Public Health Agent
AIDS Program Manager, NYS Department of Health, NY
“It takes many qualities to be a “Social Change Agent:” compassion, empathy, courage, patience, flexibility, and a positive mental attitude.”
When I first graduated from college, I worked with “at risk” youth as a childcare worker and then a probation officer. Two other experiences that shaped my personal and professional life were becoming a foster parent and getting my MSW.
For several years, I worked with communities and populations that needed an advocate and/or additional supports in their life. Through this micro experience, I realized there were other ways that I could do the same work as a macro social worker.
Now, as an AIDS Program manager, a great day is when a client says, “Thanks,” “I get it,” “I have made a breakthrough,” “The system works better.” I am blessed to have made a positive impact in the lives that I have touched.
