“If you want to make a difference on an ongoing basis, then this is the field for you.”
I worked in sales prior to social work. I made money, but something was missing. Social work fits my world views; I like working autonomously in a profession that makes a difference.
With my corporate world experience, I discovered I would be good at EAP work (Employee Assistance Programs). I love the mix of duties it affords!
I’ve been a self-employed EAP subcontractor at federal agencies, worked with other EAPs and in solo practice, been the clinical director of an outpatient treatment program for women, and have mobile crisis and psych emergency experience. I was dispatched to NYC after September 11th to debrief survivors of the WTC attacks and those in buildings nearby.
I love what I do – but we need to be better at taking care of our own. Our work is important.
