“I became a social worker to help kids and their families make positive decisions and be successful.”
I wanted to be a social worker since I was around 10 years old; I didn’t know at the time that the profession existed! Today I’m a supervisor for a community-based program for dependent and delinquent youth. The program involves the family, school and all individuals involved with the child so that comprehensive services are provided.
As a supervisor, it’s also rewarding when my staff members learn how to use their own knowledge base and skills to be successful – and challenge themselves, not giving up on a child or family.
My advice? Don’t ever forget that you must be supportive and optimistic; clients can easily read you. Be prepared to go above and beyond to provide support. Enjoy the small gains.
