“Social work requires a ‘bigger picture’ perspective on life, people and the world.”

It is an honor to have a front row seat in people’s lives as they make positive changes – sometimes ones that break generations of negative behavior patterns. It’s great to watch people obtain clarity and freedom in an area of their life that has previously caused them great pain.

My social work training allows me to see the holistic picture of someone’s life, how the systems they are involved in affect them and vice versa. It has taught me to start where the person is rather than where I would like them to be.

My advice for students in graduate school – create the program of study that fits your career interests. If your school doesn’t offer the classes you want, find professors who will support independent study. Don’t settle for entry-level work if you’re ready for more.
