Mental Health Social Worker
“There are a variety of jobs and job settings; I don’t think any other degree is as versatile.”
I was motivated to become a social worker to help those in need. Most recently, I have worked in the area of mental health.
I like being of service by listening to how clients make it through great adversity. They are there to tell their story and to share their problems. I help them continue on their journey as best they can. A social work degree gives me many tools to work with.
A social worker must also be willing to challenge social injustice – to find a strong voice within and speak up even if it’s difficult. For example, it’s been a rewarding experience to speak about my history of depression to a large group of social workers and other professionals, to help build empathy and reduce stigma for this painful issue.
I don’t think you could find a more rewarding career. Your job is to help and you get paid well for it!
